McLympics Builds Teamwork Skills

The cheers can be heard halfway across McDonogh's campus as sixth-grade students call out support for their teammates during the annual McLympics. Designed to build teamwork skills, each advisor group becomes a relay team whose members alternately jump rope, hit tennis balls, run around the track, shoot baskets, run the bases, perform cartwheels, hurtle down the twisty playground slide and cheer each other on. The event culminates in a single elimination tug-of-war competition.

This year, social studies teacher Margaret Bitz was pleased to announce that not only was this the best cheering she had heard, it was also the fastest that the McLympics had ever been completed. Fellow teacher Ted Scocos added that the top five teams had broken all previous time records.
