Miss Carolyn Retires
And they will miss her. Said Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston, "When you talk about kitchen fixtures, most people think about cabinets and plumbing, but we've had the best fixture of all for the last 29 years in the person of Carolyn Greenberg."
She always took special care of the lower schoolers, setting up for their lunch shift, serving them on the line each day, and understanding their food preferences.
Explained Carolyn, "The kids really like me, the little ones, and they're always bringing me thank-you cards." Those she received upon her retirement included such wishes as "congratulations," "good luck," "we'll miss you so much," and "I love the way you always say 'hon' and everything."
Carolyn joined McDonogh's cafeteria staff when her own children were small. "I had free time and I said, well, you know, I'll see if I can get the job. It's just a part-time job, but I liked it so well I stayed on."
Over the years, she worked for three different food-service companies; saw the end of family-style dining, when only table biddies came through the cafeteria lines; and watched students grow up and come back with their own children. "It's that they remember me more than I remember them," she said. "They say I haven't changed."
Carolyn Greenberg's retirement plans include spending time with her four grandchildren and visiting campus colleagues, those she calls family. "Everybody was just wonderful to me," she said. "I really would like them to know that."
