Spectators at the 15th annual Cardboard Boat Race had much to laugh and cheer about last Friday. The narrow boat known as Robin's Rifle won both speed heats and Best Overall Boat (BOB). All Star, Wonkatania, and Caution Wet Floor stayed afloat and in contention.
The same could not be said for Chillzilla, the Hummer, which sank quickly. Likewise, the U.S.S. Timber capsized. Superman flipped over too, but its resourceful crew managed to propel the boat to the finish and win the award for valiant effort.
The victorious RR claimed awards for building technique and procession. Their crewmen wore green tights and felt hats. One accompanied the craft dressed as Maid Marian.
Caution Wet Floor, an appropriately named float built by four members of the housekeeping staff, finished second in both speed heats and won the award for creative engineering.
Willy Wonka's red, white, and blue Wonkatania won the prize for aesthetic value. The colorful riverboat and cheerful Oompa Loompa crew lost its canopy by the end of the final heat, but made a great showing just the same.
Sophomore girls piloted All Star, a bright yellow Converse athletic shoe that won the payload award.
The junior boys who steered the U.S.S. Timber received the pure gall award, while Chillzilla received the more dubious honors: the Poseidon Adventure and cheap boat awards.
