On May 9, sixth grade students and faculty honored McDonogh's unsung heroes, the maintenance and transportation staff. The special recognition ceremony was part of the annual Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project.
Sixth grade teacher Margaret Bitz welcomed everyone by saying, "Today we take the time to recognize a spectacular group of people. Today we take time out of our schedule to honor all that is done for us, day in and day out."
In preparation for this special event, sixth graders interviewed and photographed each member of the maintenance and transportation staff and wrote a biography about them. During the program, each honoree was presented with a beautiful booklet containing their biography and photo, as well as a folder full of cards and poems, and a certificate of appreciation.
The program concluded with a performance by the sixth grade teaching team and members of the sixth grade chorus. Afterwards, the housekeeping staff was treated to a sumptuous brunch where students were on hand to serve them.
The community service project was created in memory of Paul T. Spies '73, who attended McDonogh for part of his 8th grade year before he became ill and died. He was an outstanding school citizen with great enthusiasm for making McDonogh a happy and constructive place.
A special tribute to the honorees, created by sixth grade teacher Jeanne Mulligan and sixth grade student artists, is on display on the first floor of Finney Building.
