Upper schoolers gathered in Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Thursday, May 8 for the final round of the 26th annual sophomore class oratory competition.
Tenth grade students spent the majority of spring term preparing a six-minute persuasive essay, arguing topics such as abortion, gay rights, and prejudice against the vertically impaired. Out of the 143 students in the class of 2010, five finalists were chosen for their content, organization, voice, presence, and originality.
Katelyn M. was the master of ceremonies as the five finalist delivered very emotional and thought provoking messages about immigrants, celebrity media coverage, homework overload, the N-word, and hybrid cars.
After careful consideration, a panel of judges, including 2006 winner Michael S. and teachers Alex Gardner and Ann Gazin, pronounced Dixon B. the first place winner for his oratory about hybrid cars. This year the judges decided on two, equal runners-up: Harry L. for his piece on immigrants and Joe M. for his essay about homework overload. Other finalists from the class of 2009 were Megan L. and Steven J.
