As upper school students put the final touches on their cardboard boats for this Friday's race, parents and friends of participants are encouraged to make plans to attend. The parade of boats begins at 2:15 PM and moves from the RL Athletic Center to the pond adjacent to the Baltimore Life building on Red Run Blvd where the race will begin promptly at 3. For more than forty student engineers, the race will mark the culmination of three weeks’ intense work to construct full-sized, seaworthy craft using only nine sheets of corrugated cardboard and other basic supplies.
Up for grabs is the coveted "Best Overall Boat" prize, in addition to several other accolades rewarding creativity and performance. The project is a voluntary, extracurricular activity for McDonogh upper school students coordinated by the school’s art and science departments. Among the crafts racing this year are a cicada with trademark red eyes and shimmery gold wings, a boxing ring featuring a costumed Rocky and Apollo Creed, a classic speedboat, and a slick car worthy of James Bond. Each has been built to hold at least four paddlers.
