Under the direction of Middle School Choral Director Suzanne Eldridge, 100 students representing all three divisions joined together on September 24 to record the song “Happiness Is” for a CD to benefit Cancer 101, a nonprofit organization that provides unique resources for people with breast cancer. Eldridge and her music partner Gerry Galuardi from the group Blue Moon Two are producing the CD entitled “Comfort Me: Songs for Healing the Heart and Soothing the Spirit.”
When Eldridge’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she made a vow to do something every year to help fight the disease and support people who are affected by it. That promise became even more important to Eldridge when the females in her family were tested for the BRCA gene mutation that increases a person’s risk of breast cancer, and she was the only one who did not test positive. “When I received the lucky news that I did not have the BRCA gene mutation, I knew I had to do something to help,” said Eldridge. Her goal is to support a different charitable organization every year.
Eldridge chose the song “Happiness Is” from the show “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” because she thought it would help people find things to be happy about when they are ill. Seventh grader Alexa W. couldn’t agree more, “The song sends out a good message. If you are feeling down, it will make you feel better.”
The students were excited to be recorded and grateful for the opportunity to support a good cause. Eighth grader Vibav Mouli shared, “Mrs. Eldridge did a really good job directing us. She cares very deeply and I think that it is good that she involved us.”
Other McDonogh faculty and staff helped Eldridge with the project. Director of Lower School Performing Arts Carole Truitt accompanied the students on the piano, while Upper School jazz band teacher Don New recorded the song, and Heather McPeters, the school’s designer, created the cover for the CD.
“Comfort Me” is a collection of folk, pop, and Broadway tunes, including solos, instrumentals, and choral groups. Galuardi wrote several songs for the CD, including “Sing Me a Song” sung by Eldridge and her five-year old son, a kindergartner at McDonogh.
The CD will be released at the end of October. If you are interested in purchasing a copy of “Comfort Me” and supporting the cause, you can pre-order a copy at www.freewebs.com/comfortmesongs. The CD’s are $15 or two for $25. All proceeds will benefit Cancer 101.
The music on the CD will bring joy to listeners in good times and bad. “It is like comfort foods,” said Eldridge. “It is provides stress relief and relaxation.”
