Thank You, Mrs. Ward

The close of the 2006-2007 school year marks the end of an era for McDonogh School. Not only will Bo Dixon be leaving us, but Donna Ward will retire as well.

Mrs. Ward has been at the front door of our school for 20 years, teaching our youngest students with the kind of love and devotion that only an outstanding teacher can offer. She has taken on every challenge and answered every call from McDonogh with the same replay, “Yes, I will give it more than my best.”

Mrs. Ward began her career with us in 1987 as an assistant teacher in the prefirst grade and moved to the lead teacher position a year later. In 1993, she became the leader of our first-ever kindergarten teaching team.

Since that time, she has taught in both the kindergarten and prefirst grades, and has been the warm and welcoming presence at the kindergarten front desk for the past two years. Mrs. Ward has taught in Elderkin Hall, Dudley Hall, and beneath the Upper School’s Kiplinger Library. No matter where Mrs. Ward was posted, delighted children followed her.

The parents of those children wrote yearly of their appreciation. Here are a few of their words:

  • “We first met her at an Open House when we were deciding on a school for our son. Her passion for teaching was immediately obvious to us; in fact, she made such an impression that our decision to choose McDonogh was clinched.”
  • “The wonderful sparkle and energy in her eyes when she talks about a project the kids are doing, and the warmth of her smiles and hugs as she speaks kindly to our son – or any child – are images that will be with us forever.”
  • “I couldn’t have dreamed that we would have been so blessed to have a teacher with your intellect, intuition, energy, and genuine affection for all of the children in your class.”

Things have a way of coming full circle. This summer, Cal Ripken will be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame. Ten years ago, Mr. Dixon wrote to Mrs. Ward, comparing her to the famous shortstop:

“It is not too much of a stretch to consider you as McDonogh’s Cal Ripken. Strong, steady, always reliable, and one of the best at the position.”

If retirement makes someone eligible for McDonogh’s Hall of Fame, Donna Ward is a shoe-in. She is one of the best we have ever seen.
