The First Day

Headmaster Bo Dixon exhorted the faculty and staff at their opening meeting to treat each new year as if it were the first. "As teachers, our ability to relate to the newness of a school year -- the firsts -- is essential. Sure, our years of experience may provide us with a little perspective or wisdom, but they are meaningless if we fail to get excited that our students are experiencing so many firsts. Will they sense our enthusiasm or will they get a hint that this is just another year."

As students emerged from the buses into the glorious September weather, they shouted to friends, high-fived the headmaster, and were joyfully greeted and sent to class. Enthusiasm was evident everywhere.

The entire school convened at Childs Memorial Terrace for convocation, which included welcomes from the headmaster as well as student representatives of each of the three school divisions. The final blessing on the day was the ringing of the bell given by McDonogh's sister school in Odessa.
