The Sky's the Limit

After watching the 1987 film, the autobiography of a West Virginia teen captivated with rocketry in the 1950s, students broke into small groups to research the movie's cultural and scientific themes. For the next three days, January 28-30, students spent half their time in class and the other half working on projects that would teach their classmates about mining, rocketry, combustion engines,'50s dance crazes, Sputnik, rock and roll, the Space Race, labor unions, and more. During a special assembly, aerospace engineer Marc Kaylor explained why scientists study space and what the astronauts training and missions are like.

By Friday, January 31, students had compiled all their research into clever videos, skits, songs, puppet shows, timelines, PowerPoints, news broadcasts, game shows, and reenactments. They presented these to classmates and teachers in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Outside, two groups shot off rockets they had built.
