Volleyball Dynasty . . . The Golden Years

Shannon Bridgham ’95 led the movement for a volleyball team in 1993, and that winter fifteen girls came out to play for teacher and coach Ginger Gelston. In their inaugural season in the AIS (Association of Independent Schools), the Eagles went 6-8. The following year their record was 7-9, and in the third year they reached the semi-finals of the AIS championship. The Eagles won their first championship in 1997 while posting a record of 23-4. The team was on a roll, returning to the championship game in 1998 only to lose to an outstanding Friends School team.

The following season McDonogh was asked by the league to play in the top conference in the newly formed IAAM (the merger of the old Catholic League and the AIS). Making the transition to the highly competitive A- conference was smooth, and the team advanced to the finals again in 1999.With an outstanding team of returning seniors, the Eagles vowed to claim the title in 2000, which they did for the next three years.

Coach Gelston-Powell, a former college volleyball player, has built this outstanding program with a combination of passion and smarts: hosting camps and having her team attend more college camps. She is optimistic that the great Eagle tradition of volleyball will continue with the success of her Upper School teams and the interest shown in the Middle School.
