Wellness Committee to Address Drug, Alcohol Issues

McDonogh Patrons has created the Wellness Committee to address issues of drug and alcohol abuse among McDonogh students. To start, the 18-member group, chaired by Amy Pollokoff, developed a four-session evening series for fourth-grade parents entitled “Roots and Wings; Raising Resilient Children.” More than 50 parents attended the first two sessions.

To develop programming, the Wellness Committee considered some daunting statistics:

* 34% of children in grades 4-6 report feeling pressure to drink wine coolers

* 82% of high school seniors have used alcohol, and 50% have used marijuana

* By the age of 18, our children have seen 180,000 alcohol-involved commercials

The committee is also actively working on programming for the Middle and Upper School parents. If parents want to join the committee, it’s not too late. Call Amy Pollokoff at 410-363-1305.
