Debaters Succeeding in National Competitions

Allan Debating Society co-captains Patrick B. ‘12 and Alex R. ‘12 won the New Trier National Invitational, one of the year’s most competitive high school tournaments, in Chicago on October 10.

The boys won against stiff competition. There were over 100 teams from all across the United States represented.

Just two weeks ago, Alex and Patrick advanced to the octafinals at the Georgetown Day Tournament. Also, Alex received distinction as the seventh best overall speaker.

All debaters argue the same topic in competition. The United States federal government should substantially increase social services to persons living in poverty. "Alex and I specifically affirm the topic by arguing that we should give proper medical care to immigrants in detention centers," said Patrick. "We owe our success primarily to research, practice, and our new coach, Daryl Burch," he added.

Their recent triumph takes the boys a step closer to qualifying for the prestigious Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in late April 2010. Only 64 teams will qualify. If Alex and Patrick are chosen to compete there, they will be the first Maryland team in the 30-year history of the tournament to qualify.

"This is a great achievement for McDonogh debate. I hope we can get word to the alumni who support the program,” said Ronald Bratt of Capitol Debate.
