The Class of 2009 got lucky with a warm, sunny, and dry day on June 12. The 137 graduates and their families were delighted to celebrate the event outside on Childs Memorial Terrace.
Starting with Abbot and ending with Zantop, classmates collected diplomas from Headmaster Charlie Britton, handshakes from Board President Charlie Monk, alumni cards from Alumni Association President Katie Ferrer ’90, and applause from the large audience.
The applause began before the seniors became graduates. As ’09 classmates left Tagart Memorial Chapel for the terrace, they walked through the traditional gauntlet of cheering faculty.
Director of Diversity Sharon Howell greeted the graduation procession after the baccalaureate service, embracing those she once taught. They were my last class of second graders!” she exclaimed.
The graduates’ send-off included warm wishes from Headmaster Charlie Britton: “Class of 2009, before I give you my charge, I want to thank you for all that you have done to make McDonogh a fantastic school. You have rolled up your sleeves and made the school stronger. You have handled your successes and your setbacks with grace, you have led the school with spirit, and you have had a lot of fun, bringing joy to us all.”
