During the 1965-66 school year, Elderkin Hall opened, a half-credit course in Art History was added to the curriculum, and NASA astronauts trained in McDonogh's pool to simulate weightlessness.
Environmental Research Associates paid the school $10 an hour to rent the pool. Among the astronauts involved in the underwater exercises was Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who would take part in the country's first moon landing three years later.
On the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11's historic mission, the full story of the astronauts' training at McDonogh is revealed.
