Lower School Legislators Lobby for a Better McDonogh

Fourth graders studying government learned this week that thoughtful arguments, proposed as bills and voted on by peer-legislators, can lead to approval by the executive branch of government--in this case, President Noreen Lidston, head of Lower School.

Each homeroom acted either as the House of Representatives or the Senate. After forming committees, students in each homeroom drafted bills that would enable McDonogh to be a better and safer place to live and learn.

Once a bill passed in their own homeroom, the group presented their bill to the other legislative body. The bills with the most votes were put before President Lidston for consideration.

Mrs. Lidston signed some bills and vetoed others. Here's what she approved:

  • D.E.A.R - Once a month, beginning on November 12, students will Drop Everything and Read between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
  • Free Dress Day - This is a perennial favorite piece of legislation! There will be one free dress day per month, many of which are already on the calendar (Red Day, Green Day, etc.) The next free dress day will be on November 20.
  • Free Seating Friday - This legislation involves only grades 3 and 4. The children will be able to choose their own seats at lunch once a month. The first Free Seating Friday will be November 13...a rather unlucky beginning!

Remarked Mrs. Lidston, "I am pleased to point out that none of the above legislation will add to the budget deficit!"
