In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with ESPN RISE, recently announced Marquez F. of McDonogh School as its 2008-09 Gatorade Maryland Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Marquez is the fourth Gatorade Maryland Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from McDonogh School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Marquez as Maryland’s best high school boys soccer player. Marquez is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May.
The junior defender recorded 10 goals and six assists this past season, leading the Eagles (20-1-1) to their second straight MIAA A Conference championship. The Baltimore Sun Player of the Year and an ESPN RISE Second Team All-American honoree, Marquez led McDonogh to 16 shutouts in 22 games this past season. He has also helped lead the Baltimore Casa Mia Bays club program to back-to-back U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships titles.
Marquez has volunteered as an administrative assistant at a local elementary school and as a tutor for area schoolchildren in addition to helping to care for an elderly neighbor.
“The thing that makes Quez so special is he has that innate desire in his heart and mind, he refuses to lose,” said Steve Nichols, McDonogh head coach. “He’ll do whatever it takes to win a game. He’s a very special kid.”
Marquez has verbally committed to play soccer scholarship at the University of Maryland beginning in the fall of 2010.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
Marquez joins recent Gatorade Maryland Boys Soccer Players of the Year Chris Agorsor (2007-08, McDonogh School), B.J. Quigley (2006-07, Archbishop Curley), and Drew Yates (2005-06, DeMatha Catholic) among the state’s list of former award winners.
