On the evening of December 4, in front of a full house in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, eighth grader Sydney M. was crowned the Middle School Idol.
The star-studded event began with performances by the top ten contestants. After a brief intermission, the judges (professional actors and singers) selected B. Fish and Sydney M. as the finalists. Both boys sang a solo of "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" with the Honors Choir as back-up, and then the voting began.
Throughout the evening, the lively audience lit up the theatre with cell phones and clapped along as the contestants performed. Many held up handmade posters to cheer on their favorite singers. And in true "Idol" fashion, video footage of the audition process was played throughout the finale.
The audition process started in September with more than 50 student singers from the Middle School. The 2009 MS Idol received an I-tunes gift card, three voice-coaching sessions, and a recording of their song.
Proceeds from ticket sales will help fund the Middle School Honors Choir trip to Florida in February. The talented group will be performing and participating in workshops at Walt Disney World.
