Signing Ceremony Honors NCAA Scholarship Athletes

Six seniors--Ali, Amanda, Gigi, Joe, Megan, and Moriah-- signed NCAA letters of intent on February 4 to accept college athletic scholarships. As has become custom, Athletic Director Mickey Deegan invited the students, their parents, and their coaches to participate in a signing ceremony after school that day in the athletic lounge.

Ali signed with Miami for soccer; Amanda with Georgetown for track; Gigi with Loyola for soccer; Joe with Virginia Tech for soccer; Megan with Maryland for soccer; and Moriah with Maryland for track and field.

Before anyone put pen to paper, coaches explained why these scholar-athletes were so heavily recruited. Each was touted for ability, sportsmanship, leadership, character, and promise to achieve in Division I programs. Each had been recognized locally and regionally, if not nationally, in his or her sport.

Coaches told charming anecdotes about their players. Steve Nichols, for instance, revealed that he called his 2008 team "Joey and the Miracles" for Joe's remarkable ability to motivate his younger teammates after their slow start.
