Fifth Graders Place First in National Contest

McDonogh's fifth graders recently tied for first place in the WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by approximately 230,000 students annually. Coached by Nancy McFadden, our students competed against 729 school teams in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge to win the highest honors.

Ten students were also among an elite group of 167 fifth graders nationwide who won top honors for individual achievement by earning perfect scores in the meet. Congratulations to Sam A., Julia D., Jack D., Benjamin F, Kevin H., Jack M., Abhi M., Megan N., Harry V., and Marisa W. for their outstanding performance.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking which first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably higher than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.

The WordMasters Challenge has been administered for the past 22 years by a company based in Allendale, New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Students will participate in two more meets in the coming months, and medals and certificates will be awarded at a Middle School assembly in the spring to those students who achieved and improved the most in the course of the year.
