Unsung Heroes Honored

During the Middle School morning meeting on April 23, sixth grade students and teachers honored some of McDonogh’s unsung heroes, the school's administrative assistants, nurses, theatre staff, and athletic assistants. They did so as part of the annual Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project.

The honorees received a standing ovation as sixth grade representatives escorted them into the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. When the crowd finally stopped cheering, Middle School Choral Director and master of ceremonies Suzanne Eldridge said, "You work so hard, you are dedicated to making McDonogh a better place, and you do your job, sometimes with little to no thanks. Well, today we THANK YOU!"

During the program, Sara S. '15 recited a poem that she wrote titled "Our Willing Workers," and the sixth grade Jump into the Arts Class performed a special song and dance to the tune of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The Class of 2015 also presented the honorees with a gift of appreciation and treated them to a delicious brunch in Lamborn Hall.

In preparation for the assembly, six graders interviewed each honoree and wrote a biography about them. The biographies and a photo of each honoree are part of a clever bulletin board on the first floor of Finney Building that was designed by the students and teacher Jeanne Mulligan.

Founded in 2005, the Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project was created in memory of Paul, who attended McDonogh for part of his eighth grade year before he became ill and died. Paul was an outstanding school citizen, with great enthusiasm for making McDonogh a happy and constructive place. Sixth graders honor McDonogh's unsung heroes, in memory of Paul, every spring.
