What a Season! Six Championships!

The spring 2009 season will go down in history for its remarkable team milestones. Even in sports like golf, tennis, and track, which focus on individual performances, student-athletes prized team victories above their own achievements.

Girls varsity lacrosse won its first-ever Independent Athletic Association A Conference championship. Playing at Gerstell Academy on Sunday afternoon, May 17, the top-ranked Eagles concluded a perfect IAAM season by defeating No. 2, Notre Dame Prep, 13-10. Both teams traded the lead through the first three quarters of the game. Then the McDonogh girls pulled ahead and stayed there. Ali B. '09 had a game-high five goals.

Boys varsity golf won its first MIAA A Conference golf crown in school history, against rival Gilman, no less, on May 16 at Caves Valley Golf Club. The final score was 16 to 5. Four of six McDonogh golfers beat their opponents in match play, and one finished with a tie. The JV team made it a McDonogh sweep. During the season, the varsity team beat all three league powers: Loyola, Gilman, and Calvert Hall.

Girls track won its sixth straight crown, an incredible 174 points ahead of its closest rival. In field events, distance races, relays, and sprints, the Eagles could not be caught. The girls set five meet records. On the boys' side, Justin G. '10 won three events, Demetrios P. ’09, a distance race.

Boys tennis added yet another championship to the Eagles nest, beating top-seeded Gilman, 3-2, on May 8 at Gilman. Alex S. ’11 won at No. 1 singles. Roshan P. '10 and Dixon B. '10 won No. 2 doubles. That left Chris B. ’11 to bring the championship home, which he did in dramatic fashion. In the MIAA individual championships the following week, Alex S. won the No. 1 singles title.

And then there was JV baseball, which played Calvert Hall at Calvert Hall for the championship on May 14. Trevor B. '12 threw a shutout, and Joel J. '12 made a phenomenal catch late in the game to preserve the 1-0 win.

There were plenty of team experiences to cherish that had nothing to do with winning or losing. Softball coach Bridget Collins praised her girls for their compassion, calling them "the team of nice."
