Laura Levitt '08 was heading back to Elon University on April 5 when the truck she was driving was rear-ended at 120 MPH by a driver evading police. Yesterday, she was able to return to McDonogh to see her former softball teammates win their last home game of the regular season.
"It was wonderful being at the softball game," said Laura.
And somewhat miraculous. Given the extent of the injuries she sustained in the accident, doctors estimated that Laura would be hospitalized for six weeks. She was able to return home after 12 days.
Laura described her experiences for a Raleigh, North Carolina news report on April 30.
"It's amazing support that keeps my spirits up," said Laura yesterday.
Much of that support has come from her friends and teachers at McDonogh. "A bunch of my friends were texting me right away," she said. A classmate set up a Facebook page for posts of encouragement.
While Laura was still in Duke University Hospital's intensive care unit, the entire Upper School gathered to compose a photo greeting for her. One of Laura's biggest fans, history teacher Dave Harley, spearheaded the effort. He saw to it that the final product, a laminated poster, reached Laura the next day.
"I see it's a poster from Mr. Harley. Knowing him, it could be anything. I opened it and started crying. That put my entire family into tears," she recalled. "Right now it's hanging up at the foot of my bed."
Laura's recovery has been remarkable, but her body has a long way to go before it is completely healed. Her shoulder is broken, her leg remains cut and swollen, and her elbow is locked in place. She hopes her doctor will allow her to start walking soon.
