While Baltimore was digging out from a record snowfall on Sunday, February 8, the MS honors choir was performing at Disney World.
Forty students and their chaperones spent a magical four days learning from the world's largest entertainment employer. They left Baltimore just hours before the first storm began and returned home before the second one hit.
The highlight of the experience was the choir's performance in Downtown Disney. Singers gave a 25-minute show for a crowd of hundreds at the waterside stage venue. They delighted the audience with renditions of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough","Over the Rainbow", "Mr. Cellophane", and more.
According to choral music director Suzi Eldridge, the singers' biggest challenge was dealing with cold, 45-degree Florida weather. They waited in thin performance wear "without complaining or showing that they were uncomfortable. Their professionalism was unbelievable. In fact, many people did not know these kids were only in seventh and eighth grades," she said.
Their Disney adventure began at Hollywood Studios, where many auditioned for the American Idol experience. Among the top twenty singers from the day's auditions were Hannah P. '14 and Mrs. Eldridge, who got to perform in the American Idol Theater later that day. Sara S. '14 got a chance to do a promo with the announcer.
The next day students attended a workshop run by a Disney singer, recording artist, and voice-over professional. Students rehearsed and recorded three-part Disney pieces that were later voiced into two scenes from "The Lion King."
Later, the kids learned music and choreography from "High School Musical" and recorded it. Their instructor explained what it takes to work in the music profession at Disney, including late-night rehearsals and performing outside in all kinds of weather.
In their down time, students were able to explore the parks, ride the rides and take in all that Disney has to offer.
Said Eldridge, "The last day was spent on the phone trying to figure out if we would beat the second blizzard. When we arrived home at 2 a.m., we were amazed to see all that snow, but we were very thankful to be back home again!""Please enjoy the pictures and video from our performance!"
