The nationally recognized Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen Band will give a hand clappin'- foot stompin' concert tonight, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Admission is $5. View event flier for more details.
Solivan and the his fellow musicians are rising stars in traditional and non-traditional bluegrass music circles, with successful CD releases and performances at major events from Nashville to Los Angeles. Performers include Frank Solivan on mandolin and fiddle, Mike Mumford on banjo, Lincoln Meyers on guitar, and Stefan Custodi on bass.
The band has had a full schedule on campus today. They played at an upper school assembly in the morning and received a standing ovation. Students showed up tired and left energized! Next, the group visited middle school social studies classes to talk about traditional or roots music. In the afternoon, they played for the second through fourth grades in the Kelly Center. Lower schoolers were thrilled to get close to the instruments and sing with the band.
"I saw the band perform and the Washington D.C. Bluegrass Union festival last April," said history teacher John Wood. "I was struck by the pure joy and energy in the band's performance. They seemed like the perfect group to bring this exciting music to our students."
Wood invited the band's banjo player, Mike Munford, to play for students one afternoon last spring. Students were enthralled.
Added Wood, "I hope that this is the first of many acoustic artists we are able to bring to McDonogh. Their commitment to traditional art forms will hopefully inspire our students to learn to play for their own enjoyment."
