During a special assembly on Friday, April 9, Upper School students heard from six professionals who use visual arts in their careers on a daily basis.
"The purpose of "Careers in the Arts Day" is to help students make a connection between visual arts and real-life experiences. We want them to realize that visual arts play an integral part in many professions." said Oletha DeVane, Head of McDonogh's Upper School Visual Arts Department.
The guest speakers included Adam Reynolds '02, president and co-founder of Boardhead Brothers, a television and film production company based in Los Angeles, Match Zimmerman '02, a Baltimore-based new media artist, electronic musician, and educator, Steve Ziger, founding partner of the architectural firm Ziger/Snead, Sonya Clark, chair of the Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, Dean Alexander, professional advertising photographer, and Curlee Raven Holton, professor of art and director of the Experimental Printmaking Institute at Lafayette College. Following the assembly, students had an opportunity to attend breakout sessions with the visiting professionals.
"Many people do not realize the vast number of professions in visual arts and careers that utilize the skills," commented DeVane. The Visual Arts Department plans to educate students about more of these professions at future "Careers in the Arts Days."
