Fans who attended the McDonogh-Penn Charter football game on Friday, September 17, were the first to get a glimpse of some new additions to John McDonogh Stadium, including a state-of-the-art press box, multi-sport video scoreboard, and new goal posts. The improvements were funded completely by the Grant and Braglio families.
"We are grateful for their generous gifts," said Athletic Director Mickey Deegan. The new scoreboard, which will be used for football, track and field, and lacrosse events, has the capability to show instant replays and video footage of fans in the stands. It can also be used to show public service announcements and interviews before and after games. "It is like a baby Ravens stadium!" exclaimed Deegan.

Football captain Evan G. '11 agreed. "The stadium could quite possibly be one of the best stadiums in the state," he said. Added co-captain Chris D. '11, "It makes walking out to the stadium on our home games more exciting. We finally can have announcers and music!"
New goal posts have orange flags to indicate which way the wind is blowing. The press box, which will be completed soon, can hold about 25 people. In addition to housing the official timer, scorekeeper, and announcer, the press box will be used by McDonogh's coaches and coaches from visiting teams.
Three flags (American, Maryland, and McDonogh) will fly on top of the press box. "The flags will be a wonderful focal point as the National Anthem is sung prior to athletic events," said Deegan.
The press box and video scoreboard will bring the McDonogh community together for more than athletic contests. "The changes will provide some new opportunities for fun things to do with kids," said Kirsten Adams, head of Upper School. Ninth graders will be the first to use the big screen for a movie during Freshman Fun Night on Friday, October 1. "Several other popcorn and movie nights are already in the works," said Adams.
Kevin Costa, director of fine and performing arts, is excited about the improvements bringing arts and athletics together. "The press box and video screen opens a myriad of possibilities for arts and theatre students,” said Costa.
Middle School English teacher Jon Aaron is planning to use the stadium instead of Horn Theatre for an upcoming assembly. The guest speaker from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will be able to use the jumbo screen for a PowerPoint presentation.
