Field of Dreams: Build it and They Will Come

Approximately 25 members of the McDonogh baseball family--players and baseball parents past and present--gathered for an early evening hot dog, peanut, and popcorn presentation on June 23 in the school athletic office. The purpose of the event was to learn about the proposed improvements to the baseball facility.

The renovation of the field is a high priority and crucial for the success of the baseball program, varsity coach Ian Hendricks '94 told the crowd. Proposed improvements include:

  • Tearing up the whole field and laser grade to correct an 8’ slope in the outfield
  • Installing an irrigation system to improve drainage
  • Re-sodding the entire field
  • Rebuilding the mound and plate area
  • Putting in new infield mix
  • Constructing a permanent fence with warning track, two dugouts and bullpen mounds
  • Improving bleachers on both sides
  • Renovating the hitting cages
  • Moving the scoreboard to the outfield

The project's cost, said development office representative Barry Rollins '74, is $310,000. Time is of the essence to raise the remaining $120,000. Work needs to begin this fall if players are to use it for the spring 2011 season. The project must be funded before construction can begin.

"I remember when McDonogh baseball had the premier facilities around," Rollins added. "Now, it seems like most of the other schools have surpassed us."

Athletic directors Mickey Deegan and Matt MacMullan reiterated the importance of renovating Eyth Field. Deegan said she expects that improved facilities “will be able to promote a renewed interest in baseball at McDonogh” and return the program, which has been without a championship since 1992, to its former prominence.

The field already benefits from a great location just outside of the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. It is named after Dutch Eyth, former varsity baseball coach and athletic director who spent 43 years at McDonogh.
