Despite the bitter cold and blustery winds, McDonogh parents and staff played Santa Claus for 136 families in need today. They delivered car- and truckloads full of gifts and $10,500 in food gift cards from the McDonogh community to St. Gregory the Great Church downtown. More than 335 children in the Sandtown-Winchester community will have a merrier Christmas as a result.
The 2010 Holiday Project, coordinated by Director of Religious Studies John Grega, concluded with only one hitch. Family profile #136 arrived yesterday, in the form of a frantic call to Grega from Gloria Williams at St. Gregory the Great Church. Could the McDonogh community provide with Christmas gifts for one more family--a grandmother with five small grandchildren?
Less than an hour after Grega emailed a last-minute appeal to help this family, he had received responses from 17 people offering to sponsor one child or all five.
"Needless to say, it was one of the easiest dilemmas to resolve in the 20 years we have been doing the Holiday Project," Grega wrote to the community. "Everything came in for the family, and now a grandmother with five grandchildren has less to worry about at this time of year, thanks to your amazing generosity!"
Classes, advisor groups, departments, and staff volunteered to sponsor the families. They bought clothes and toys for the children. They also contributed money to buy food gift cards for the families they sponsored.
In an email thank-you, Grega added, "I do hope the holidays will be merrier for you, thanks to the smiles you have helped to bring to more than 335 children who otherwise would not have had much to smile about!"
