Lower schoolers joined parents and faculty members at Childs Memorial on Friday, June 4 for the 2010 Lower School Closing Ceremony.
The ceremony began with the kindergarten through third grade students processing down the hill, walking behind the self-made grade and class banners depicting highlights from the year and important lessons learned.
Then, fourth graders marched single file down the hill to the beat of the drum corps.
After John Grega opened with a prayer, the second grade followed with a musical performance and the kindergarten and first grade performed the unofficial Lower School song, “Be the Best,” for the fourth graders, reminding them to carry the lessons of Lower School with them to Middle School and beyond.
But before sending the fourth graders on their way for good, Lower School Head Noreen Lidston reminisced about the class and their distinct personalities, reading off nicknames, favorite dining hall foods, favorite subjects, and desired professions. Pizza and PE class were common favorites, and one student’s dream to run a hedge fund was among the more unique.
Each child then crossed the stage to receive a handshake and a certificate from Headmaster Charlie Britton, who gave a speech challenging the rising middle schoolers to make themselves better people over the summer. “Help a friend, read a book, do a chore without being asked, or simply make a point of enjoying time with someone you love,” said Mr. Britton.
With the headmaster’s words in mind, the students turned to their lower school teachers, who lined up to give them handshakes and hugs, bittersweet farewells filled with both tears and smiles.
The fourth graders then took the stage to sing the McDonogh Alma Mater, and after a benediction from Mr. Grega, representatives from each class exchanged grade level banners to symbolize their ascension to the next level of their McDonogh journey. The crowd responded with a collective “aw” when two future members of the class of 2024 collected the kindergarten banner.
Finally, exuberant rising fifth graders cheered and threw their blazers into the air as Mrs. Lidston officially closed the ceremony and the school year.
