In the midst of a crisis, one thing is certain, the McDonogh community will come together to lend support. As soon as word of the earthquake in Haiti reached our campus, students, teachers, and administrators began making plans to help relief efforts. Below is a summary of the generous donations to date:
The Lower School January Giving Wednesday raised a record-breaking $3,418.09 for the Red Cross and Partners in Health, an organization that is sending volunteer doctors to Haiti.
The Middle School Leadership Group organized a fundraiser that raised $5,220, with 87.2% participation among middle schoolers. The funds are going to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.
Dave Harley's sophomore advisory spearheaded a fundraising effort in the Upper School that raised $3,212, for Doctors Without Borders. The freshman SGA held a bake sale that brought in $100 for the people of Haiti, and John Grega's doughnut sale added another $113 to the gift.
Members of the McDonogh family donated 27 pairs of crutches to a team of Johns Hopkins pediatric residents heading to Haiti on a medical mission.
In addition to what has already been done, the following events have been planned:
The UNICEF Club is sponsoring a Haiti fundraiser at the Reisterstown Road Cosi on Tuesday, February 9 from 4 to 9 p.m. Cosi will donate 10% of the proceeds to McDonogh's fund for Haiti. Bring your friends and family!
Students in the Upper School's Leadership course are holding a live and silent auction to benefit Partners in Health. The live auction will take place at a special assembly on Friday, February 19, and the silent auction will take place in the Kiplinger Library beginning February 8. Silent auction winners will be announced at the assembly on February 19. Donations of goods and services are welcome by all. To donate, contact Sophomore Class Dean Nancy Love nlove@mcdonogh.org.
