Movin' On Up for the Class of 2014

On perhaps the most pleasant day of the spring, the Class of 2014 officially moved on to upper school. The transition from eighth to ninth grade took little more than an hour on Monday morning, June 7.

Soon-to-be graduates passed by family and friends on their way to Childs Memorial Terrace, most acknowledging the cameras with nervous smiles.

Student speakers reflected the personality of their collegial, cooperative class. Staci D. recalled memories of their younger days, while Wes H. postulated about upper school life.

Headmaster Charlie Britton commended class members for their collective good character. Then Britton, the English teacher, implored them to read, read, read.

When Head of Middle School Darren Ford stepped up to the podium, his remarks were full of emotion as he addressed the class, which includes his youngest son.

Classmates glowed with pride when it came time for them to accept their certificates. As English teacher Jon Aaron called their names, each walked across the terrace as an eighth grader and sat down as a ninth grader.

The ceremony also included performances by the Eighth Notes, an especially talented group of singers whose voices have carried far and wide. The Eighth Notes were among ten finalists in the Apple and Eve Fruitables Mash-Up Contest. They also performed in Disney World in February.

And if closing ceremony weather has any bearing on the climate ahead in upper school, the Class of 2014 will no doubt have a glorious experience.
