One potato, two potato, three potato, four! The second annual McDonogh Roots Potato Harvest was fun for all volunteers, young and old alike. Potatoes were harvested to donate to the Maryland Food Bank.

Volunteers uncovered and bagged more than 400 pounds of potatoes from the Roots Garden on Saturday, September 25. The seven red bags from the season's first potato harvest were on their way to the Maryland Food Bank by Monday morning.
While broken digging machinery limited volunteers' work on Saturday, many used their own shovels to break into the hard ground in search of spuds. In the end, they harvested three of 11 rows planted last spring.
With many more potatoes still in the ground, Roots organizers are hoping to stage an in-school harvest day soon for students. "Since we planted twice as many potatoes this year, it's all good to stagger the harvest," said Roots volunteer Mel Bratz.
