Sixth graders spent the past several weeks completely immersed in Greek history and culture. Teachers redesigned the current schedule to create an integrated unit that allowed flexible time sharing and creative teaching methods. Students studied Greek government and Olympic history during social studies, learned about the Greek alphabet, elements, and foods in science class, focused on the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece during reading, and reviewed the history of Greek theater, read Greek plays, and authored their own plays based on the Greek model in English class.
During the final days of the unit, students sampled authentic Greek cuisine and learned about the chemical and physical changes that occur during cooking, performed their own Greek plays, and participated in a triathlon. In true Olympic tradition, a laurel wreath was placed on each athlete's head at the closing ceremonies.
