Rodney Glasgow, director of diversity and community relations at Worcester Academy in Worcester, Massachusetts, was the keynote speaker at McDonogh's Black History Month assembly.
Glasgow spoke on "The Dream: Why We Can't Wait." He discussed the meaning of Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, the importance of multicultural awareness, the challenge of inclusion, and the importance of social justice work.
Glasgow talked about being challenged as a student to explore diversity and then take steps to address awareness issues. He attended a public elementary school in Baltimore, Gilman School, and Harvard University.
Recalling a particular American studies class, Glasgow said he felt the African-American perspective was missing from the conversation. He protested by not taking a quiz. After that, the teacher asked Rodney and some classmates to help craft inclusive lessons that spoke to their experiences.
Students responded to Glasgow's message with more questions than the speaker had time to answer. About 25 upper schoolers were able to continue the conversation with Glasgow afterward, over lunch in Bowman House.
Glasgow is pursuing a master's degree in independent school leadership at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of the National Association of Independent Schools Student Diversity Leadership Conference, which he helped cofound as a Gilman student.
