Reid and Sam S. '12 saw how happy their brother, Will, was after he learned to ride a two-wheel bicycle at a Lose the Training Wheels camp last summer.
That's why they--along with the Chesapeake Speech School run by the boys' mother, Sue Ann--pushed to bring the LTTW bike camp for special-needs children to McDonogh and to Maryland. Read more in the Baltimore Sun.
From August 2-6, 40 children learned to ride two-wheelers for the first time. About 50 McDonogh students and parents helped the use LTTW's adapted equipment. The children learned to balance on bikes that have interchangeable, graduated-size rollers.
Cheers erupted from family members and volunteers when a child made a solo loop around the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center for the first time. In 75 minutes of practice over five days, most were able to do just that.
Said Reid and Sam, "Learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage all kids deserve to accomplish, regardless of the challenges they face and regardless of whether the family has the resources to travel out of state or not. Biking is wonderful because not only is it fun but it gives families an activity to enjoy together."
