The disaster in Haiti has inspired students in all three divisions to offer support. Sophomores in Dave Harley's advisory are spearheading the Upper School effort, seeking donations for Doctors Without Borders. Writes Laura O.'12, "Currently, Haiti does not have sanitation, medical aid, safe drinking water, and food, things that we take for granted. We are hoping that everyone in the McDonogh community, specifically the Upper School students, will donate $5 each." Collections are taking place January 19 and 20.
The Middle School Leadership Group is organizing a fundraising effort in the Middle School. Members are in the process of finalizing details, but they have determined that the funds raised will go to American Red Cross efforts in Haiti.
In the Lower School, the monthly Giving Wednesday will support Haitian relief efforts. Students are asked to bring in their own money once a month to help those in need. Ordinarily, the money goes to buy sandwich making supplies for a local food pantry. January's Giving Wednesday will take place January 20, a week ahead of schedule, and donations are pouring in.
Wrote Head of Religious Studies John Grega and Associate Head of Lower School MaryLu Greenwood to parents: "This Lower School effort will be coordinated with the other two divisions which are already planning their own response to the crisis. Current plans call for fund-raising to assist well-established relief organizations such as the International Red Cross who already have a presence in the country and whose response will thus be swift."
