The Stream is Clean

On Friday morning, October 8, seventh graders headed out of the science lab and into the waters of the Gwynn Falls stream on McDonogh's campus to collect all sorts of information. The annual outing is the culmination of a science unit on the physical and chemical properties of water. Working in small groups, students measured water velocity, depth, width, and temperature at various locations along the stream.

The young scientists also collected bugs and identified them. "The seventh graders found many water pennies, a species that is very sensitive to water quality," said science teacher Eileen Heady. "This means that the water is very clean in this part of the watershed."

Over all, it was a very successful adventure. "We had a gorgeous day, one of the warmest ever, and the kids were completely focused on their many tasks," shared Heady.
