Vote for 8th Notes to Win National Contest

The 8th Notes are one of ten finalists in a national music competition, the Fruitables Mash-Up Contest. They want to win $10,000, not for themselves, but for sister school McDonogh 26 in Gretna, Louisiana.

"We, the students of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, sing because we are passionate, dedicated, and love to brighten people’s day.

"But, unfortunately, the students at our sister school McDonogh 26 have never been able to feel the love we feel towards music. In August 2006, McDonogh 26 was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. By the end of the storm, the building was in pieces and hundreds of students were left without desks, classrooms, and books.

"Because all of the funding has gone to the reconstruction of the actual building and the development of the academic program, the budget for the music program has been drastically cut. To help our sister school, we would like to donate our winnings to McDonogh 26 in support of their music curriculum.

"We want all of the students at this school to have the same opportunity as we do. We want them to be able to experience and enjoy the gift of music."

When Jennifer H. '14 alerted choral music director Suzi Eldridge about the VH-1-sponsored contest, the deadline for entries was little more than a week away.

"We had to arrange a mash-up of songs from a given list, perform it on video, and then write a 100-word essay on why we think we should win the prize," said Eldridge.

Undaunted, the 8th Notes singers got to work. Ryan S. created the musical arrangement. Hannah P. wrote the essay. The choir was able to put the video together in two class periods.
