Imagine the summer to-do list of a sprawling, 137-year-old campus like McDonogh's. While Campus Master Plan projects have yet to begin, repairs and improvements have been made across Foxleigh Hill. Most will be completed before students arrive on September 1.
Elderkin Hall received the most attention. New hardwood flooring covers brightened hallways. Classrooms have been spruced up with new paint, and, in many cases, new occupants. Rooms for each grade level are now clustered together, thanks to 18 teachers who switched teaching spaces.
Lighting across campus was replaced. New, energy-efficient lighting illuminates all classroom buildings. Much of the work, including the installation of motion-activated switches, was funded with a grant from BGE.
The school is about to bid a final farewell to its two 1937 Titusville boilers that provided steam heat to campus for 73 years. No longer serviceable or efficient, they have been removed. Since windows were replaced campuswide three years ago, the remaining boiler can heat the school until a new energy plant is constructed as part of the Campus Master Plan.
Two libraries received limited makeovers. The Naylor Room in the Kiplinger Library has new furniture and a new, more efficient layout. Two small rooms and an office in the middle school's Krauss Library have been combined into a computer-equipped quiet room that any class can use.
Makeovers didn't stop with the libraries. The Foster Technology Center in Keelty Hall is newly refurbished. And the wrestling room, also used for lower school physical education, has new mats.
Still underway is a donor-driven project in John McDonogh Stadium. A new press box, goal posts, and a video scoreboard are being installed. With its video capabilities, the scoreboard will have multiple uses in addition to athletics.
Tennis courts are being rebuilt at this writing. The project should be finished in three weeks.
Repairs from the winter blizzards to buildings and landscapes have been completed.
The view of Keelty Hall from the main drive is more appealing. Overgrown plantings have been removed and new landscaping installed.
The list concludes with a litany of projects that most will never see: pump replacements, concrete repair, electrical panel testing and replacements, painting, and so on and so on ...
