English teacher Efia Dalili invites upper schoolers to explore cultures through writing and literature. As the school's new diversity director, she is excited to expand cultural awareness community-wide.
"It's important for us to understand that relationships are key. We are all part of a circle. We need one another," says Efia.
Appointed by Headmaster Charlie Britton last spring, Efia succeeds Sharon Howell, who returns to the second-grade classroom after 11 years as diversity director.
"Sharon has done a phenomenal job in the role," says Efia. "She's encouraged all of us to be inclusive. I'm thankful to her for that and for our friendship."
Efia shares Sharon Howell's philosophy that diversity activities work best when students initiate them. The D4M (Diversity for McDonogh)Club wants to organize conversations with and for students in all three divisions this year, explains Efia.
The school's cultural showcase, Multicultural Night, will be Efia's to oversee. "I know how everyone looks forward it, how much fun it is. This is one of our best events, and I want to do a good job with it."
Efia brings plenty of experience to the role. She served as interim diversity director during the 2004-2005 school year, has been moderator of the Black Awareness Club, and is a regular participant in diversity workshops and conferences. A member of the upper school English department since 200l, Efia will continue to teach. She will also serve on the administrative team.
Efia holds a bachelor's degree from San Diego State University, a master's from Cornell, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a published writer, whose current projects include poetry, short stories, and what might become a novel.
"I'm looking forward to the role," she adds. "I know it will challenge me. I'm hoping that my talents will emerge somehow."
