Joy Thomas Moore's son Wes and another boy by the same name grew up blocks apart in urban Baltimore in the '80s and '90s. While one Wes Moore is now serving a life sentence for murder, Joy's son is a Rhodes Scholar, combat veteran, White House fellow, and bestselling author of the book The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.
How did the single parent put her children, including McDonogh grad Shani Moore, on a path to success? Joy Moore has told her story on "Oprah" and will tell it again in "A Conversation With Joy Thomas Moore" on Wednesday, January 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in McDonogh's Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Read this USA Today account of the Moores' powerful stories.
Moore's talk, sponsored by Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust, is free and open to all parents. It is BEST's Molly Hathaway and Redmond C.S. Finney Leadership Program event.
