See McDonogh students create Maryland's longest continuous art print-- 1,000 feet--on Wednesday, April 20 (rain, go away) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Students from kindergarten through grade 12 will lay a hundred 12' x12" nature-themed, relief tiles they made out of styrofoam in art classes. Upper schoolers will ink the tiles. A sheet of Tyvec will be placed over the inked tiles. The design will be transferred to the Tyvec with a large landscape roller, a machine used by landscapers and groundskeepers. The project will span from Tagart Chapel to the tennis courts.
This is a celebration of fine arts, to draw attention to the excitement the arts can bring. It's a colorful, feel-good activity on an ignominous day: the anniversary of Columbine in 1999 and the oil well explosion in the Gulf last year.
Lafayette College professor and internationally-known printmaker Curlee Raven Holton will be on hand to direct the project. He coordinated the world's longest continuous print--2,000 feet--at Lafayette College in 2006.). Professor Holton and McDonogh's head of visual arts, Oletha DeVane, are both professional artists whose paths crossed when both showed work at the same exhibition.
