A slice of white siding floated in the sky like a lazy kite. The rest of the Godfrey house--one of two demolished yesterday to make way for campus master plan improvements--came down with force.
Wood beams, wallboard, windows, and roof shingles crunched in the grip of the excavator. A crew sprayed water on the house to minimize dust. About 20 from around campus watched the demolition, which took 40 minutes at the most.
Today, only memories and mounds of debris remain. A blue kiddie pool sits atop the pile.
Both houses, estimated to be about a hundred years old, were home to faculty and staff members over the years. They had been moved to Woods Rd. from other campus locations years ago.
The houses' most recent occupants--the Shamers and the Godfreys--were not among the onlookers. Both have relocated on campus.
