A team of McDonogh fifth graders, coached by middle school English teacher Nancy McFadden, recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by approximately 220,000 students annually. The contest consists of three separate meets held at intervals during the school year.
Competing in the fifth grade division against 705 school teams, McDonogh students tied for sixth place in the nation in the year’s second meet in February. McDonogh’s team scored 192 out of 200 possible points. The mean score for the nation was 111.
Two of McDonogh’s students also won highest honors for individual achievement. Sierra F. and Brett S. both earned perfect scores in the meet, while in the entire country only 51 out of over 37,000 students did so.
Other students who achieved outstanding results, missing only one problem, were: Andrew C., Adam R., Amrita S., Uriah S., Jake S., and Alexander Z. Only 139 students out of 37,000 achieved at this level.
Students who missed only two problems were Noah A., Kate C., Alex P., Jonathan R., Lauren S., Katie T., Jessica T., Alexi T., Scott W., Zachary W., Nathan W., and Jaime Y. Only 223 students out of 37,000 achieved at this level.
The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies. The Challenge has been administered for the past 24 years.
