Delegates from the High School Attached to the Harbin School of Technology visited McDonogh on April 15 to cement the relationship between the two schools. Students from the Harbin School, located in Heilongjiang province P.R., China, will attend the new McDonogh ESOL program this summer.
Headmaster Charlie Britton and his wife, Jen, welcomed Harbin principals Mr. Zhang Tao and Mr. Qu Hui, along with the rest of the delegation, for a luncheon at the headmaster's home. With help from translator Joy Zhu, the group shared school philosophies.
During the congenial conversation, McDonogh and Harbin representatives discovered some similarities and differences between the two schools. For instance, admission to both schools is very competitive, given the schools' outstanding reputations. Harbin's class sizes are much larger--60 to 65 students on average--and its campus is much smaller by comparison. The visitors marveled at the vastness and beauty of McDonogh's campus.
At the conclusion of the luncheon, Charlie Britton and Mr. Zhang Tao signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the possibilities for future student, teacher, and sister-school exchanges.
As the official document states, "McDonogh School and the High School Attached to the Harbin School of Technology understand that the ultimate goal of this agreement is to promote education and cultural appreciation among our respective communities. We look forward to a productive and valuable association."
As Charlie Britton said later, "It was wonderful to host the delegation from Harbin at our home and to talk about the possibilities of the future connection between the two schools. We value this as the beginning of a strong relationship. We're also excited that it comes at a time when we are adding Chinese to our already-strong foreign language curricula."
The association between Harbin and McDonogh began with Director of Summer Programs Bob Rush and Harbin's U.S. agent, Joy Zhu, president of U.S.-China ECDA. The two met at a conference and realized that there could be great benefits to a connection between the two schools. A Harbin student delegation visited McDonogh in February.
