Christine Alexander, the first woman to serve as McDonogh's board president, has died.
A nurse by profession, Chris brought both passion and compassion to her volunteer roles at McDonogh and beyond. She devoted much of her time to the school while her sons, Matt '88 and Seth '91, were students and young alumni.
Wrote Board President Mike Falcone '79 in an e-mail to trustees yesterday, "Her death is a tremendous loss for our community. Chris was ... one of the best, most thoughtful stewards McDonogh has ever had."
Named a McDonogh trustee in 1985 after serving as parents association president, Chris was widely respected for her commitment to McDonogh, to education, and to principled leadership. She rose to the position of board chair in 1995, serving one term before she and her husband, Bruce, relocated to New Haven, CT.
"Chris' loss was a huge one for all of us, but she leaves a great legacy, not only in her work and friends at McDonogh, which meant the world to her, but also in her work here in New Haven," wrote Bruce in an email.
After McDonogh, Chris turned her passion for education into a new venture, New Haven Reads. She was the founder and unpaid director of the literacy organization, which continues to give the gift of reading and books to city residents.
The following obituaries capture the remarkable life and work of Christine Alexander: The New Haven Independent and The New Haven Register.
