“When you ask for salt, you also get the pepper because they travel together,” said sixth grader Julia C.
If you need someone to properly set your table this Thanksgiving, ask the sixth graders in Associate Dean of Middle School Merritt Livermore’s study skills class. As part of this course, students fine-tuned their dining skills in The Brass Eagle on Wednesday, November 16 and Thursday, November 17.
The afternoon’s focus was on properly setting the dining room table and learning to use utensils correctly. While students learned where to place the plates, cups, forks, and spoons, they also reviewed some basic table etiquette. “I learned how to eat pizza with a fork and knife, instead of using my fingers,” said Claire W. “But, holding the fork correctly is really hard,” added Michael B. “There are no elbows on the table and no slouching,” Jake F. reminded the class.
The class also researched some simple, traditional manners. The students interviewed adults on campus to learn which manners are viewed as important and valuable. Back in the classroom, they prepared short presentations for their classmates on manners such as hats off, please and thank you, email and cellphone use etiquette, thank you notes, and holding doors. According to Landen K., “Some of the manners are very unexpected, like helping the girls be seated."
“Manners are important to review because people interrupt other people all the time,” shared William S. “The students really enjoyed the class and are taking away valuable and practical life skills,” said Livermore. Sara B. echoed this feeling, “It is lot of fun to learn while doing activities like this.”
“I will definitely be helping to set the table on Thanksgiving,” shared Alexa S. “It will be the most beautiful table we have ever had.”
