During the Middle School morning meeting on April 15, sixth grade students and teachers honored the dining hall staff as part of the annual Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project.
The honorees received a standing ovation as sixth grade representatives escorted them into the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. When the crowd finally stopped cheering, Middle School Choral Director and master of ceremonies Suzanne Eldridge said, "Thank you all for the amazing work you do every day. We hope that we can pay you back in the way we respect the space and you as we go about our daily routines."
Eldridge explained that the sixth graders and teachers have been very busy with this project. "Their work started in February when each advisory group spent half a day working alongside the dining hall staff as servers, cleaners, and preparers." Students wrote about the experience and English teacher Jeanne Mulligan created a beautiful bulletin board in Finney to display their literary work.
During the program, sixth graders Lauren L., Connor M., and Riley T. shared reflections, and a group of students presented a skit about a typical day in the dining hall. The Class of 2016 also presented the honorees with a gift of appreciation and treated them to a delicious brunch in Lamborn Hall, which they helped pay for by doing chores.
Founded in 2005, the Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project was created in memory of Paul, who attended McDonogh for part of his eighth grade year before he became ill and died. Paul was an outstanding school citizen, with great enthusiasm for making McDonogh a happy and constructive place. Sixth graders honor McDonogh's unsung heroes, in memory of Paul, every spring.
