Sixth graders Ryan G. and Jonathon R. won over the judges and audience with their performances during the Middle School Idol competition on Saturday, December 3 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Ryan's rendition of “On My Own” from the Broadway musical Les Miserables impressed the judges. Jonathan captured the audience vote as the "Fan Favorite” for his performance of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.”The star-studded event, hosted by eighth grader Ben F., began with a MS Honors Choir performance of “Listen to the Music” by the Doobie Brothers. Then, the top eleven contestants dazzled the full house with their vocal talent.
After intermission, the judges (professional actors and singers from the Baltimore area) selected Ryan G. '18, Lacey P. '19, Jonathan R. '18, and Nique Y. '16 as the top four finalists. Each contestant performed their song one more time before the judges made their final decisions.
Throughout the evening, the lively audience lit up the theatre with cell phones and clapped along as the contestants performed. Students cheered on their friends and favorite singers. In true "Idol" fashion, video footage of the audition process was played during the finale.
The audition process began in September with 45 Middle School singers hoping to be crowned the next MS Idol. Teachers narrowed the field to 20 contestants who performed in the semi-finals on Friday, December 3. The 2011 MS Idol winners both received an I-tunes gift card and three voice- coaching sessions.
Proceeds from ticket and DVD sales will help fund the Middle School Honors Choir trip to Florida in March. The talented group will be performing and participating in workshops at Walt Disney World. A DVD of the finale is $15 and can be ordered by emailing Director of Middle School Choral Music Suzanne Eldridge at seldridge@mcdonogh.org .
